Music Instrumental

Both Band and Orchestra are year-long electives offered to students with interest in playing an instrument in an ensemble (group) setting. These performance classes provide quality learning experiences that are not available in other classes, and there are even some neighboring schools that do not have programs similar to ours, so this is a truly unique experience. Anyone may join and instruments are available for check-out, much like a library book or Chromebook. Beginners are especially encouraged to sign up for band or orchestra, so if you were unable to participate in elementary school, you are more than welcome to join us! Instruction references California State standards for music education.

We will perform at Ochoa’s Winter and Spring concerts and assemblies, and we even travel to adjudicated competitions. Students are encouraged to continue their musical training through high school and beyond.

Concert Band uses wind and percussion instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophones, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, as well as mallet/keyboard percussion (xylophone, marimba, chimes, glockenspiel) as well as battery (drums, cymbals, and other idiophones)

Orchestra consists of bowed stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello, and double bass

Instruction will include: Repertoire, Sight-reading, Music Elements and Theory, Ear-training and Solfege, Instrumental Technique and Care, Historical and Cultural Contexts, Aesthetics, Time Management, and How to Practice Effectively

Fundraising

It takes money to keep a music program going. All students are expected to participate in two fundraisers to earn money toward Music in the Parks, new music pieces, folders, etc.
